AEO vs GEO
AEO vs GEO: what they are and why your business needs both
AEO gets your business picked as the short answer AI shows at the top. GEO gets your business named inside the recommendation AI writes when someone asks who to hire. They are two different jobs, and a service business needs both to show up across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude.

AEO is about being the answer. When someone asks a question and the AI shows one short response at the top, AEO is the work that makes that response yours. You win it with short, direct answers an engine can quote word for word, with FAQ and How-To schema that hands the engine clean question-and-answer pairs, and with headings written the way people actually ask questions. Think of AEO as the quick-answer slot. It rewards clarity and structure on your own pages, which is a big part of how we work.
What GEO is
GEO is about being the recommendation. When someone asks an AI who is the best social media agency in Phoenix and it names a handful of businesses, GEO is the work that gets you into that list. You win it by looking like a real, trusted entity: credentialed authorship, consistent business information everywhere, reviews, original data, and mentions on the third-party sources the AI already cites. Think of GEO as the trusted-recommendation slot. It rewards authority and reputation, most of which lives off your own website. Our Living with Lolo case study shows what that looks like in practice.
The difference in one line
AEO gets you quoted as the answer to a question. GEO gets you named as the business to hire. One is being the fact. The other is being the recommendation.
AEO vs GEO at a glance
| AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) | GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Be the single answer | Be the named recommendation |
| Question it wins | What is X and how do I X (a person wants a fact) | Who is the best X and who should I hire (a person wants a recommendation) |
| Where you show up | AI Overview, featured snippet, voice answer | The named businesses inside a ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude answer |
| How you win it | Short direct answers, FAQ and How-To schema, question-shaped headings | Entity authority, credentialed authorship, third-party citations, reviews, original data |
| Main signal | Structure on your own pages | Off-site trust and a clean, consistent entity |
| Skip it and | You get recommended but never the quick answer | You get quoted but never the business they actually call |
Why you need both, not one
These are two different moments in how people use AI, and you cannot predict which one your next customer will hit. Sometimes a person wants a quick fact, and AEO wins that moment. Sometimes a person wants to know who to hire, and GEO wins that moment. If you only do AEO, you become the source of the answer but never the business named when someone asks for a recommendation. If you only do GEO, you might get named in longer answers but miss every quick-answer slot where a lot of the traffic now lands. Do both and you show up whether the AI is answering a question or recommending a provider. That is the whole point of our AI visibility services.
There is a practical reason the two reinforce each other. A strong AEO answer that gets lifted into an AI Overview is also a signal of authority that feeds GEO. A strong GEO reputation, with reviews and third-party citations, is exactly what makes an AI confident enough to quote your answer in the first place. We treat them as one system with two jobs, the same approach we use for Scottsdale and Phoenix-area service businesses.
What the research shows
of Google searches now show an AI Overview, the answer box AEO targets (Advanced Web Ranking and Digital Applied, March 2026).
drop in organic click-through when an AI Overview appears, so being the answer beats being the blue link below it (Seer Interactive, September 2025).
of Google searches now end without a click to any website, which means the answer itself is the visibility (SparkToro and Datos, 2025).
year-over-year growth in visits across generative AI platforms, reaching 9.5 billion, the surface GEO targets (Similarweb, 2026).
of US ChatGPT prompts now cite a source, up from about 1.6% a year earlier, so AI is naming more businesses, not fewer (Similarweb, 2026).
of relevant ChatGPT answers cite a professional-services business, so for most service firms the recommendation slot is still wide open (Similarweb, May 2026).
The last two numbers are the whole opportunity. AI is citing more businesses every month, and in professional services almost no one has claimed the ground yet.
